superamit says, “I’m calling it now: The laptop starts dying tomorrow”
Unfortunately I think he’s got it wrong, or at least his analogy is flawed. A camera phone can clearly replace all the functionality of a cheap point-and-shoot camera. The iPad does not replace all the functionality of a laptop. I can’t sit on the couch with my iPad and write code for instance. The iPad is a media device, until it gets a compiler and toolchain than actually runs on the iPad, not my laptop, it doesn’t replace all the functionality.
Great point. Also, consider researchers who need to travel to where a datalogging device is set up, plug in, and download the logged data. This task is impossible with an iPad, which has no standard serial or USB port.
The iPad might be useful for some, but the laptop definitely isn’t dying any time soon.

Some games, like first person shooters, are better with a keyboard and mouse.
Others, like football, tennis and bowling, work best IN THE REAL WORLD.

It seems that I can’t simply stop using technology and go to sleep these days; rather, I have to make a slow transition.
First, I turn off the Mac Pro, get into bed and start using my MacBook Pro. Eventually, I turn it off as well and migrate to my iPod touch. Once I’ve finished checking up on Twitter (or writing a blog post, as I am doing right now), I can set my iPod aside and fall sleep while staring at the only active piece of technology left in the room, my alarm clock.
No, of course I’m not a nerd!

I remember the days when we could joke about computers being everywhere. “What next, will my microwave crash?”
Well, our whiteboards now lag. Doomsday is upon us.
